Fighting for Freedom, Defending Dignity: 100 Years of Ukrainian Literature

At Ukraine House, we were honored to host a book night celebrating 100 years of Ukrainian literature. The evening also marked the presentation of high-quality English translations of Ukrainian classics and contemporary works, published by the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute.

On behalf of Ambassador Oksana Markarova, Deputy Chief of Mission Denys Sienik opened the event, emphasizing the importance of standing with Ukraine as it endures daily, large-scale Russian attacks on peaceful cities.

Counselor Katja Smagliy moderated a thoughtful discussion with Ukrainian authors, including:

  • Dr. Oksana Lutsyshyna – novelist, poet, and Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin

  • Volodymyr Rafeyenko – award-winning writer, poet, and scholar of literature and film

  • Dr. Mykola Riabchuk – prose writer, essayist, and Honorary President of PEN Ukraine

  • Nina Murray – poet, author, literary translator, and Program Director at Razom Connect

The panelists reflected on how language and literature help shape Ukrainian identity, especially during times of war, when Russia is actively trying to erase it.

A special thank you to Dr. Oleh Kotsyuba, Director of Print and Digital Publications at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University, for his powerful remarks. He expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian community in the U.S. for its steadfast support and reminded us that books — especially those written by Ukrainian authors — are among the most meaningful gifts we can share.

We are sincerely grateful to the Embassy of Ukraine in the U.S., the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, and Razom for Ukraine for their partnership in organizing this event and for their ongoing commitment to promoting Ukrainian culture.
