Embroidery Mosaic Map of Ukraine

Mosaic art is deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture. From small pieces of glass or stones, our ancestors created entire monumental works, such as the wall mosaics in Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral.

At Ukraine House, we also decided to immortalize something very close and dear to Ukrainians. With the help of mosaic art, the Ukrainian community and our American friends recreated embroidered patterns from different regions of Ukraine.

To create the mural, we held two community workshops with local participants. The piece features 25,000 stones, each measuring 8x8 mm, set into tiles sized 300x300 mm. The final panel spans over two meters in length. Every pattern was carefully reviewed and approved by an ethnographer from the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine.

During the Vyshyvanka Day celebration at Ukraine House, we unveiled the map together with Ambassador of Ukraine to the US, Oksana Markarova, and Gertrud Muller for all visitors. It serves as a beautiful reminder that no matter how different we are or what we do, we will always be united by embroidery—the cultural code of our nation.

Thank you for this wonderful initiative, Sophia Kachur, for the tireless work on the mosaic, Gertrud Muller, for organizing the workshops, Oleksandra Sienik!
