Mykola Zhuravel – a Master of Levkas
Back to Gallery
Mykola Zhuravel is widely recognized as one of the first Ukrainian artists to incorporate the traditional icon-painting technique of levkas — a chalk-and-glue ground historically used in Eastern Christian iconography — into the language of contemporary art. The scale of Zhuravel’s artistic production is striking, as is the depth of his stylistic and technical experimentation. His work reflects a continuous and thoughtful artistic evolution, combining traditional craft with contemporary visual language. Nowadays he is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, member of the BZH-ART Association, Ukraine, and an Academician of the Rome Academy of Modern Art, Italy.
Ukraine House is very proud to present Mykola Zhuravel’s artworks celebrating one of the pioneering artists who brought the traditional levkas technique into the field of contemporary art. The exhibition was held in spring 2026.
