"Colorful Ukraine in Expressive Paintings" by Volodymyr Patyk

Volodymyr Patyk was a prominent Ukrainian painter, classicist, and art historian, a People’s Artist of Ukraine and laureate of the Taras Shevchenko State Prize. Born in the village of Chorny Ostriv in the Lviv region, he studied at the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (now the Lviv National Academy of Arts), graduating in 1953. In 1969, he created monumental wall paintings for the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Cinema in Lviv, and through his public works established himself as an innovative, optimistic artist whose style fully flourished after Ukraine gained independence.

From 1992 to 1998, Patyk taught at his alma mater, becoming an Associate Professor in the Painting Department. The opening of borders enabled extensive travel, including formative trips to France and Paris, where he studied museum collections and painted architectural interiors. Awarded the Taras Shevchenko State Prize in 1998, Patyk traveled widely across Ukraine, following the paths of Taras Shevchenko and drawing inspiration from the country’s landscapes, which deeply shaped his artistic vision. The exhibition of his work was held in Ukraine House during summer 2022.
