Carols of Birds, Bells, and Sacred Hymns From Ukraine: Explored by Dr. Marika C. Kuzma

Ukrainians find joy even in the darkest times. For centuries, our ancestors sang koliada and shchedrivky not only to honor the birth of Jesus Christ but also to uplift their spirits, stay positive about the future, and take pride in their heritage. The word rejoice captures the essence of how Ukrainians celebrate Christmas.

This, and so much more, was beautifully explored by Dr. Marika C. Kuzma in her book Carols of Birds, Bells, and Sacred Hymns From Ukraine, which delves into the rich tradition of Ukrainian Christmas carols. Thank you, Dr. Kuzma, for your exquisite presentation.

As Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova noted, it was a great pleasure to learn about and experience these carols, a true embodiment of Ukrainian culture that russia has tried to erase for centuries.

We are deeply grateful to our special guests: the children’s ensemble from the Taras Shevchenko School of Ukrainian Studies, whose joyful performance of Shchedryk (Carol of the Bells) brought light and warmth to Ukraine House. Singing alongside Dr. Marika C. Kuzma was a moment of shared celebration and pride.

It was a great honor to welcome all our guests and sing together. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas filled with hope and joy.
